ATHENA (Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics) was an X-ray astrophysics observatory mission designed to address fundamental questions about the physical processes that shape the Universe. It was the result of the reformulation, in 2011, of the IXO mission. In May 2012, ATHENA was not selected by the SPC to continue into the definition phase.
