    Rosetta Lander unveiled
    A full size model of the Rosetta lander was presented to the public for the first time today. The unveiling ceremony took place at the Institute for Space Simulation in Cologne-Porz, a facility operated by the German Aerospace Research Centre (Deutschen Zentrums für Luft und Raumfahrt or DLR).

    Rosetta prototype flies on Stardust
    Congratulations from the Rosetta team on the successful launch of Stardust! What do the Giotto, Vega, Stardust, Contour and Rosetta comet missions all have in common? The answer is they all carry European-built instruments designed to study what comet dust is made of.

    Rosetta science working team reports excellent progress
    Some 100 scientists and engineers came together during the latest meeting of the Rosetta Science Working Team (SWT) at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands, on 14 and 15 January. Those present included representatives from the United States as well as all ESA member states.

    The post-Christmas winner of our Rosetta children's picture competition is Elodie Berthet, aged seven, from Onex, Switzerland. Our pre-Christmas winner was Lisa Mackay, aged 9, from The Netherlands.

    Rosetta Passes Important Design Review
    The Rosetta comet rendezvous mission has passed another significant milestone. According to ESA's usual practice for major projects, a Rosetta Mission System Design Review took place at ESTEC in The Netherlands on 10 December 1998. During the review an independent team of engineers and ESA officials closely scrutinised all the elements of the mission, including the ground stations, the spacecraft, the payload of scientific instruments and the launcher.

    IPC gives go-ahead for Rosetta
    ESA's Industrial Policy Committee (IPC), meeting in Paris on 26 November, has given the final go-ahead for placing the Rosetta development contract with Dornier Satellitensysteme, Germany.

    Rosetta experiment reviews completed
    The last of the Rosetta Experiment Intermediate Design Reviews (EIDR) was successfully completed on 28 October, at ESTEC.

    Contract signed for Rosetta deep space communications
    Returning a stream of data while flying alongside a comet almost 900 million km from Earth requires a particularly sensitive and reliable communications network. The European Space Agency has recently signed a contract which should ensure that the vital information returned by the Rosetta spacecraft during its long journey through the Solar System will safely reach the eagerly waiting scientists.

    First observation of Comet Wirtanen with ESO/VLT
    The European Southern Observatory's new giant telescope, has provided excellent new images of Rosetta's target comet, Comet Wirtanen.

    New asteroid targets for Rosetta
    On its way to meet with comet 46 P/Wirtanen, Rosetta will fly by and study two asteroids. The target asteroids have changed to Otawara and Siwa.

    Rosetta experiment reviews in progress
    Rosetta Experiment Intermediate Design Reviews (EIDR) started at the beginning of July and will be finished in October. At the EIDRs the design of the individual experiments of the Rosetta payload are reviewed by ESA.

    While Comet Hale-Bopp steams away into the outer darkness, not to return to the Sun's vicinity for many centuries, the European Space Agency and multinational teams of space scientists are finalizing plans to examine another comet at very close quarters, in the Rosetta mission.

    Apart from heralding the maiden flight of Ariane-5, the end of 1995 is set to be a period of considerable and intense activity for European space science. Three major projects will be launched in the autumn, placing Europe at the forefront of scientific exploration of the universe.

    PR 43-1993: ESA confirms ROSETTA and FIRST
    At its 68th meeting on 4/5 November 1993, ESA's Science Programme Committee endorsed the recommendation of the Space Science Advisory Committee to implement Rosetta, a comet rendezvous mission, as the third cornerstone and FIRST (the Far Infrared Space Telescope) as the fourth cornerstone of the Horizon 2000 programme. The launch dates will be 2003 and 2006, respectively. However, FIRST would return its scientific data earlier than Rosetta, as the travel time to the comet is rather long.
